What is Ultimate Flag Football?
AYFL Ultimate flag is the first and only flag format in Northern Virginia that incorporates the use of helmets and shoulder pads. Like the pros’ spring training, players expand their football skills without fear of major injury as often seen in head-on collisions in an unprotected flag environment. AYFL Ultimate Flag is the most advanced flag football experience, spring league in Northern Virginia. (No weight restrictions for ball carriers.)
How is Ultimate Flag Football different from Traditional Flag Football?
Ultimate Flag Football gets players used to limited contact that underlies many of the physical aspects of tackle football. Players develop traditional football skills that cannot be achieved in a traditional flag format such as:
· Extra protection from equipment
· Blocking Techniques
· Defensive Positioning to Pull Flags & Similarities to Tackle Football
· Run Game Concepts
· Passing Game Concepts
· Catching Techniques
· Alignment & Proper Football Stance
· Offensive & Defensive Position Names & Roles
· Overall Offensive Concepts
· Overall Defensive Concepts
Is there tackling in Ultimate Flag?
There is NO tackling in Ultimate Flag. However, there is a Contact Zone (up to 5 yds beyond the line of scrimmage) where players are permitted to use open hand, above the waist blocking techniques; stiff arms and various defensive line techniques to protect or get to the ball carrier. Contact from these techniques along with attempts to grab flags can still lead to a player falling to the ground either by themselves or along with other players.

How are teams selected?
We try to honor parent requests for coaches and to be on teams with friends for carpooling. We also look at the experience level indicated by the parent of the athlete. We try our best to make sure each team has a similar mixture of experience levels. In addition, we take into consideration height and weight so each team has enough players for the various positions, ex linemen, potential QB, and receivers although there is no weight limit on eligible ball carriers.
